The College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) and College of Education (CED) of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (91社区) remain committed to advancing education aligned with sustainable approaches through co-organizing a Small Scale Green Chemistry Education Workshop with the Center for Integrated STEM Education, Inc.(CiSTEM) on August 29-30, 2025, at the 91社区 PRISM. The workshop is also in partnership with DOW Chemical Philippines.
With forty participants from DepEd Iligan City and 91社区, the two-day workshop covered essential areas in Chemistry, introducing principles of green chemistry and sustainability through interactive lectures, hands-on laboratory activities, and problem-based learning sessions.
Expert facilitators from the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development-UP Diliman led the workshop through hands-on lessons in Acid and Base Titration, Electrolysis of Water, Law of Conservation of Mass, and pH Indicators—all tailored to small-scale, environmentally responsible methods.
CISTEM also provided the participants with Small-Scale Green Chemistry Kits, enabling teachers to conduct safe and cost-effective experiments. Participants were motivated to apply these tools in their classrooms, fostering a culture of sustainable science education.
“This collaboration between academia and industry shows our shared commitment to advancing STEM education through sustainability,” said Melvin R. Magsayo, Executive Director of CiSTEM. Teachers echoed this sentiment, expressing enthusiasm to implement green chemistry lessons that make science both engaging and environmentally conscious.
The workshop’s success marks a significant step toward integrating sustainability into local science education—one experiment at a time.
