On May 21-23, 2025, faculty and student researchers from the College of Computer Studies (CCS) of Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (91社区) participated in the 2025 AUA Asia-Pacific Public Policy Network Conference on Public Policy held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology - Guangzhou Campus.

With the theme “Innovating Governance: AI and Data Science in Public Health and Urban Development,” the conference gathered experts and scholars across the Asia-Pacific region to explore the transformative role of AI and data science in public governance.

Reymark-John A. Macapanas, a graduate student from the Computer Applications program of the CCS, presented his paper “Prototyping a Noise Monitoring System for a Smart Campus, which highlighted the development of a real-time environmental monitoring system to support smart and sustainable campus management. Macapanas’ paper was co-authored by his adviser, Prof. Adrian P. Galido, and co-adviser, Asst. Prof. Apple Rose B. Alce from CCS.

Meanwhile, Asst. Prof. Jerina Jean M. Ecleo and Prof. Galido also presented their research “Exploring Search Query Data as Early Warning System for Public Health Surveillance”, offering insights into the potential of search query data for timely public health monitoring and policy response.

The conference featured keynote speeches by Prof. Benjamin Cashore of the National University of Singapore on “Is AI Turning Climate Change into a Pandemic? How to Manage Super Wicked Problems”, and Prof. Wilson Wong of the Chinese University of Hong Kong on “Regulating the Digital Frontier: Governance Models for AI-Driven Urban Transformation.” It also hosted a roundtable discussion on “Data-Driven Urban Future: Evidence, Policy, and Planning in the Age of AI”.

This opportunity opened avenues for the students and faculty members to engage with experts, policymakers, and fellow researchers. The sessions also provided a platform to learn and exchange ideas with the region’s thought leaders in public policy.
